The recent launch of ChatGPT by OpenAI is currently the talk of the town, and Twitter is exploding with incredible examples of how users can utilize this new language model. So let's explore how we marketers can also use it for SEO.

If you are looking for concrete search engine optimisation examples, check our article out with 13 different ChatGPT SEO examples and use-cases.

If its more general answers and examples read our ChatGPT - The Ultimate FAQ for SEO Marketers (49 Questions Answered) or how to use the latest GPT4 version for SEO.

And as ChatGPT is built on some of the same technology as SEO.ai, you can watch this video to see how we implemented similar features where you can ask the AI about almost anything. We just tailor-made it for article creation instead of a chat interface.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an advanced natural language processing AI model developed by OpenAI, designed to understand and generate human-like text based on the input it receives.

For SEO, ChatGPT is a valuable tool capable of generating coherent, relevant, and informative content to improve website visibility and user engagement.

Let's start with the beginning. What is ChatGPT?

In short, ChatGPT is a generative language model optimized for conversational chat.

Instead of a classic single prompt that most of the generative language model is built on, it's possible to have a conversational chat and ask ChatGPT to adjust or elaborate on the answers it provides.

A chatbot on steroids.

ChatGPT is also able to produce code, and many of the examples that people are currently showcasing are where it generates code for a variant of code or answers difficult mathematical questions. From creating code to debugging code snippets.

We can of course, also just ask ChatGPT itself and it returned this:

ChatGPT is a natural language processing model that is capable of generating human-like text. It was developed by OpenAI, and it uses a variant of the GPT-3 architecture. ChatGPT is designed to be able to generate text that is coherent, engaging, and relevant to a given prompt, making it useful for a wide range of applications such as chatbots, language translation, and content generation.

Unlike previous language models, ChatGPT is specifically designed to be used in conversational contexts, so it is able to generate text that is more natural and varied than what was previously possible with language models.

How to use ChatGPT for SEO

I also tried asking ChatGPT if SEO marketers could use it for SEO.

I started with the question:

How can ChatGPT be used for SEO?

I'm sorry, but I am not able to browse the internet, so I don't have the most up-to-date information on how ChatGPT could be used for SEO. However, ChatGPT is a natural language processing model that is capable of generating human-like text, so it could potentially be used to automatically generate content for websites. This content could include keywords and phrases that are commonly used in search engine queries, which could improve a website's search engine ranking. However, it's important to note that search engines have become very sophisticated and are constantly evolving, so using ChatGPT for SEO would likely require a deep understanding of how search engines work and what factors they use to rank websites.

Amazing well written answer, but not really the content I am looking for here.

So I tried to tweak and go in another direction.

How can generative language models be used for SEO?

As I mentioned earlier, generative language models like ChatGPT can be used to automatically generate content for websites, including text that contains keywords and phrases that are commonly used in search engine queries.

This content can help improve a website's search engine ranking by making it more relevant and useful for users who are searching for specific terms. However, it's important to note that simply using generative language models to generate content is not enough to improve a website's ranking on its own.

SEO is a complex and constantly evolving field, and it requires a deep understanding of how search engines work and what factors they use to rank websites in order to be effective. In addition to generating high-quality content, a successful SEO strategy should also focus on factors such as the website's design and user experience, the quality and relevance of the links pointing to the website, and the website's overall authority and credibility in its field.

Thats better. But the answer is kind of a text blog so I tried to ask it to make it as a bullet list:

Please make the above answer as a bullet list

Sure, here are the key points from my previous answer as a bullet list:

  • Generative language models like ChatGPT can be used to automatically generate content for websites, including text that contains keywords and phrases that are commonly used in search engine queries.
  • This content can help improve a website's search engine ranking by making it more relevant and useful for users who are searching for specific terms.
  • Using generative language models for SEO is not enough on its own, and a successful SEO strategy should also focus on factors such as the website's design and user experience, the quality and relevance of the links pointing to the website, and the website's overall authority and credibility in its field.
  • SEO is a complex and constantly evolving field, and it requires a deep understanding of how search engines work and what factors they use to rank websites in order to be effective.

And to make it even more digestible

Please make the bullets short and more precise

Here are the key points from my previous answer in a more concise form:

  • Generative language models can be used to automatically generate content with keywords for websites.
  • This content can improve a website's search engine ranking.
  • Successful SEO also requires a focus on other factors such as website design, links, and authority.
  • SEO is complex and requires a deep understanding of search engines.

And to make the formatting even better I asked it to help with highlighting main words.

Please highlight the main keywords in the list with bold

Sure, here are the key points from my previous answer with the main keywords highlighted in bold:

  • Generative language models can be used to automatically generate content with keywords for websites.
  • This content can improve a website's search engine ranking.
  • Successful SEO also requires a focus on other factors such as website design, links, and authority.
  • SEO is complex and requires a deep understanding of search engines.

And to round it off I also asked it for some of the related keywords for SEO and ChatGPT and it came up with this:

Here are some potential keywords that users might use when searching for information about using ChatGPT for SEO:

  • ChatGPT
  • SEO
  • Natural language processing
  • Generative language models
  • Content generation
  • Keywords
  • Search engine ranking
  • Website design
  • Links
  • Authority
  • Search engines

It's important to note that these are just examples, and the actual keywords that users might use when searching for information about ChatGPT for SEO could vary depending on their specific interests and needs. A good SEO strategy would involve using a variety of relevant keywords in order to reach as many potential users as possible.

Here Im actually a bit disappointed and its clear that it cannot direcly be used for keyword research. It instead more looks like it took some of the keywords from the chat I just had with it and made those into a list.

It again shows that currently a skillset is to be creative with these models.

So I tried to ask it

Make 5 variations of "ChatGPT for SEO" as a list

Here are five variations on the phrase "ChatGPT for SEO":

  1. "Using ChatGPT for SEO"
  2. "ChatGPT and SEO"
  3. "ChatGPT: The Future of SEO"
  4. "ChatGPT as an SEO Tool"
  5. "Maximizing SEO with ChatGPT"

This is not all bad, but it's clear that its not going to overtake some of the classic keyword research tools like Ahref, Storybase or our own AI and audience based Keyword Reseach Tool anytime soon.

But it is good for writing these kind of variances on a bit longer search phrases.

ChatGPT and search intent grouping

My colleague Torbjørn tested whether the platform could assist with categorizing search intent. He made this short video.

We have collected more examples on how to use ChatGPT for SEO in another article.

SEO.ai and ChatGPT - what the future holds

So ChatGPT is fresh off the press (it was launched on 30th November 2022), but we are already working on implementing it in the SEO.ai platform.

It's amazing how many questions and queries the technology can answer.

But as my examples above illustrate, it can be a bit difficult off the bat to have it generate meaningful outputs on an excellent blogpost that can just be pasted in.

So we are working on solving this.

So soon, our users will be able to leverage this artificial intelligence technology as well as the many other AI and ML frameworks already in the technology stack in order to write better content faster - and have the content optimised for ranking in Google.
