Whether you are curious to find out if an article you have read is generated by AI or you work with a content generator and want to see if your text could potentially be flagged as AI-generated, a good AI content detector is what you need.
These, however, are actually hard to come by as it has proven difficult to create a reliable AI content detector. It can be described as a bit of an arms race between content generators and detectors, and right now, the AI content generators seem to be winning.
Finding detectors online that work is not impossible, but not all are free. That's why we have tested a bunch of them to bring you a top ten list of AI content detectors.
How we tested the free AI content detectors
To identify the best free AI content detectors, we generated a text using AI of more than 3,800 characters. This fully auto-generated text was submitted to each AI content detector online for analysis. We used the entire text when possible and the first 1,400 characters where the detection tool was limited.
The AI-generated text can be viewed at the bottom of this post
We then prioritized the AI detectors based on their ability to detect AI content and their overall usability, features, and limitations.
List of Top 10 Free AI Content Detectors
The list below presents the ten AI detectors we have found to bring you the best results. Not all of them passed our test, but these ten provided the best result of the close to 20 detectors we tested.
Probability: 100% AI-generated.
Limit: 5,000 characters
Yes, we think our own detector is the best. Hardly surprising, perhaps, but here are three reasons why we put it above the rest:
- It passed the test.
- It is truly free, and the character limit of 5,000 is better than other good detectors.
- It's an ensemble model, meaning it combines several detector algorithms, which makes the results more stable.

Probability: 100% AI-generated.
Limit: 2,000 characters
The free version of Sapling.ai is fast and easy to use. However, it is limited to 2,000 characters. For longer texts, you need to subscribe.
Probability: 1% Human Score - "highly probable that an AI text generation tool was used".
Limit: 2,000 words (free version)
The results page in the GoWinston app is quite detailed, with separate scores for human writing and readability, and an AI prediction map highlighting sentences that are "likely" and "possibly" AI-generated. More options are available for subscribers.
However, the free version only lasts seven days and is limited to 2,000 credits which equals 2,000 words.
Probability: "AI content detected". The probability is calculated for each paragraph. Our AI text received a probability of between 24.6% and 39.9% of human writing. One sentence received a 66.2% probability for AI-generated content.
Result: Passed, sort of. The detector was on the right track but failed to detect the text was entirely AI-generated.
Being able to see a probability for each paragraph is a cool feature, but it doesn't provide a score for the entire text. Copyleaks.com detector has more advanced features available only to subscribers.
Probability: 86% "Highly Likely to be human".
Limit: 25,000 characters
This AI content detector divides the score into three parameters and highlights sentences that stand out as generated content.
Probability: 88% Human-Generated Content
Limit: 1,500 characters
Writer.com's detector is elementary, and the results are communicated very clearly. Though it failed the test, it did recommend editing the text until there was "less detectable AI content. The 1,500-character limit, though, is constraining to work with.
Probability: 50.1% "Unclear"
Probability: 33.5% AI GPT "Your Text is Likely Generated by AI/GPT"
Result: Failed, sort of. Based on a probability factor of 33.5%, it's surprising the detector thinks the text is generated. I would be worried about many false positives with this one.
ZeroGPT.com highlights sections most likely to be AI-generated.
Probability: "Your text is likely to be written entirely by a human".
Limit: 5,000 characters (free version)
This is the original AI content detector, meaning the first. It blew everyone's mind when it launched, but now several better alternatives exist. At least when comparing free AI detectors. It highlights sentences "more likely to be written by AI". In our case, it highlighted just four sentences in total.
Probability: 1% AI-generated "This text is mainly written by a human"
The free version is intended for "illustration purposes only". According to Crossplag.com, the free version doesn't reflect the model's accuracy provided to institutions and for commercial use.
Free AI Content Detector
Probability: AI Score 50
The score is just a number, in our case, "50" - Whatever that means. Is it 50%? No one knows. Low accuracy and a website that leaves you wanting ensure this AI detector last place on our list.
