Whether you are curious to find out if an article you have read is generated by AI or you work with a content generator and want to see if your text could potentially be flagged as AI-generated, a good AI content detector is what you need.
These, however, are actually hard to come by as it has proven difficult to create a reliable AI content detector. It can be described as a bit of an arms race between content generators and detectors, and right now, the AI content generators seem to be winning.
Finding detectors online that work is not impossible, but not all are free. That's why we have tested a bunch of them to bring you a top ten list of AI content detectors.
How we tested the free AI content detectors
To identify the best free AI content detectors, we generated a text using AI of more than 3,800 characters. This fully auto-generated text was submitted to each AI content detector online for analysis. We used the entire text when possible and the first 1,400 characters where the detection tool was limited.
The AI-generated text can be viewed at the bottom of this post
We then prioritized the AI detectors based on their ability to detect AI content and their overall usability, features, and limitations.
List of Top 10 Free AI Content Detectors

SEO.ai
https://seo.ai/tools/ai-content-detector
Probability: 100% AI-generated.
Result: Passed!
Limit: 5,000 characters
Yes, we think our own detector is the best. Hardly surprising, perhaps, but here are three reasons why we put it above the rest:
- It passed the test.
- It is truly free, and the character limit of 5,000 is better than other good detectors.
- It's an ensemble model, meaning it combines several detector algorithms, which makes the results more stable.

However, the free version only lasts seven days and is limited to 2,000 credits which equals 2,000 words.
CopyLeaks.com
https://copyleaks.com/ai-content-detector

Result: Passed, sort of. The detector was on the right track but failed to detect the text was entirely AI-generated.

Being able to see a probability for each paragraph is a cool feature, but it doesn't provide a score for the entire text. Copyleaks.com detector has more advanced features available only to subscribers.
